Mike Kus wrote over at 24Ways, a wonderful article about creating designs based on the viewer and the potential user rather than focusing on design trends. He posits that creating a visual and meaningful experience that is relevant to the industry your website falls within is more powerful than creating a site that fits in with the current web trends.
